Social Media and the Benefits for Small Businesses

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, as a small business owner you’ve been told things like; “You have to be on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn to grow your business!” or “If you’re not using social media your small business will be out of business in 5 years!”. And maybe you’ve listened to the buzz and maybe you haven’t. Either way, social media can in fact help your small business.

Small Businesses and Social MediaAlthough most business owners have been told they need to be taking advantage of social media, they are unclear why. Lets focus on some of the benefits social media can provide to small businesses that use the networks correctly, consistently and daily.

Increased Reach:

Likely one of the most obvious reasons for a business to use Social Media would be to increase their brands reach. Networks like Facebook and Twitter have hundreds of millions of users, giving you direct access to where your customers spend their time online.

Word of Mouth Marketing:

As a business owner you understand the importance of Word-of-Mouth-Marketing, in fact it’s likely your best form of marketing. Social Media is quickly becoming the new form of Word of Mouth Marketing. This is simply because the networks make it so easy to brag about their great experience with your brand. Take Word of Mouth Marketing to the next level by getting involved on Social Media.

Continual Touches:

If your small business has ever experimented with direct mail marketing, you know that it takes new customers hearing and seeing your business’ name and message several times before they take action and become a customer. Social Media makes it easy to put your business in front of new customers on a daily basis, turning the amount of time to make an individual into a customer shorter than ever before.

Customer Service:

One of the main reasons why your customers shop at small businesses is because of the great customer service they receive. However, if your business isn’t on networks like Facebook or Twitter, you are losing out on an extremely powerful customer service opportunity. Social Media puts you direct contact with your customers, allowing you to handle customer inquiries almost immediately, something that will make your business stand out from your competition.

Equality:

Before Social Media there has never been a tool that has been more available for small businesses to take advantage of in the same manner as larger corporations. As a small business using Social Media you are on an equal playing field. When it comes to using and getting results from Social Media you have the same opportunity as any other business, regardless of size or budget.

This is just the beginning of how Social Media can be used as a tool to support and grow small businesses. Social Brothers will be sharing an article each month on how to better understand and use Social Media to grow your online presence. Trevor – These are all valid reasons small business owners need to have social media presence. The bottom line is small businesses need to be on social media because the customers are there. However, I would caution against jumping in the social media blindly. You can get burned if you are not careful and don’t know how to handle it properly. I had written an article on the traps small business owners need to avoid when considering social media presence. Would love to hear your expert view on them – http://www.smallbizviewpoints.com/2012/08/15/small-business-owners-beware-of-these-social-media-marketing-traps/

    AngelBiz Great article, thank you so much for sharing! I agree with all of the mentioned points in the article, unfortunately many small businesses don’t take the time to do any research prior to them jumping on several networks.
    Here are a couple other articles we’ve produced that help support exactly what you’re talking about in your article;
