The use of computers in a small business has changed the way small business owners handle everyday tasks. The ease of gathering and sending information has become a huge time saver. Chances are you are reading this blog post from your business computer. You may also use that computer to gather helpful information for your business, as well as keep in touch with current and potential customers. If you have employees, they most likely also have access to the computer and the internet. Without an Internet usage policy in place you and your business can negatively be impacted. When no policy is in place, you not only open your business to potential risk, you also open your business brand and reputation to potential harm.
Here are 3 reasons your business should have an Internet usage policy:
You can’t watch every move your employees make when using your business computer. Without you knowing they could be updating their Facebook page, sending personal emails to their friends or maybe even doing some online shopping. If they are doing that they are not doing the job you are paying them to do.
There is a very good chance that you keep important business information on your business computer. Your employees also have access to this information. This information can be easily copied or sent to an unauthorized party.
Anything placed on your computer can be seen by anyone who has access to it. That can include customer information such as names, addresses and credit card numbers. If this information gets sent out accidentally, it can result in potential ID theft. Another potential security breach can occur if a virus was inadvertently downloaded to the computer. That potential virus can open another avenue for potential ID theft.
By creating an Internet usage policy for your business, you are able to clearly define what you consider as acceptable computer usage for your business. Once the policy is in place it needs to be enforced. Any violation of the policy should result in corrective action being taken.
If you don’t have an internet usage policy in place now is the time to create one. With the ability of more and more tasks being done on the computer, your business has a bigger chance of potential harm occurring.
By having this as well as other policies in place, you will help ensure that you are able to run an efficient, secure and productive business.
